Then I hear on the local conservative talk radio one of the hosts interviewing a rep from the recycling department.

I refuse to recycle as a matter of principal. The environazis just love to make things up and charge for it. The earth is big, the resources grand and people are resourceful. Apparently recycling metals makes economic sense and is commendable. Everything else should just be sent to the landfill, preferably in a centralized location so that future generations can vaporize it with a laser from space or something.
