While shooting enemies accounts for a large part of the game, the real challenge lies in solving the devious puzzles needed to reach the end of each level. These conundrums typically involve locating items scattered throughout the various screens, then discovering where they must be used; the solutions are occasionally nonsensical, and players will often find themselves resorting to trial and error in order to progress.
Being a game of the early s, it should come as no surprise that Elf is a challenging game. The sense of excitement and discovery can quickly turns to one of frustration, thanks to the sprawling levels and relentless number of enemies attacking you from both sides of the screen. Fortunately for Cornelius, help is at hand in the form of mysterious potion bottles left lying around, the contents of which can be imbibed to bestow a range of beneficial effects.
Some restore lost health — which you will absolutely come to rely on in later levels — while the auto-fire potion does pretty much what it says on the label, allowing the player to fire a volley of magic blasts by keeping their finger on the trigger.
Herbs can be found located throughout many screens within each level, although many are situated off the beaten track, or require some nimble jumping skills to reach. Share your gamer memories, help others to run the game or comment anything you'd like.

Whatever you do don't play this one, try Elf by Ocean instead.
That game is a masterpiece compared to this one. View all comments Expand vote statistics. No reviews yet! Be the first one to review it. Graphics are nice and animation is acceptable. Music is annoying but it is much better than sounds which do not fit into the game.

Gameplay is difficult, mixing platform, shoots and using magic and objets. If you try to finnish the game is enjoyable, but most of the people play 2 minutes and give up I love this game and still playing 20 years later It is very lovely made. Another reviewer said he hates this and he dosent know why. I know why. From the back of the box it looks like its going to be a great arcade platforming romp. It isn't.
It has the usual shortcomings such as no music and fx together, that horrid gradient colour backround and worse of all, flick screen scrolling, ala ninja rabbits!
